Yesterday, I returned from a quick trip to Pittsburgh for a bit of museum hopping, a little shopping and a visit with family. The Strip is a narrow half-mile tract located off the Allegheny River just outside of the city with converted warehouses that create a vibrant mix of old-style grocers who still offer fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, meats and spices under one roof. The street is lined with gourmet shops, street stands, and classic eateries.
I stocked up on spices, cheeses and pasta from the Pennsylvania Macaroni Co. Their deli counter offers a great selection of cold cuts and prosciutto is always a must. My nephew and I did a quick round in Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop for that hard-to-find treat, we even saw candies you cannot find anymore.
Have a wonderful New Year,
Kathleen
What a delightful post, Kathleen……I would of camped out at the Pennsylvania Macaroni Co. and sampled the deli meats and cheese….Mmmmmmmm.

Happy New Year to you and your family. Love your pictures from “Da Burg”. People don’t think of Pittsburgh as a destination place but the city is surprising, which all the bridges and a stop at Primanti’s for their sandwiches are the best. History buffs will be surprised what a big part the Three Rivers City played in the history of this country.

Happy New Year and hope you enjoyed the holidays. I learned a great deal of the cities history during this trip from shop-keepers and people on the street. I’m already planning our next visit.

I’m going to Lucia’s tomorrow for a capicola sandwich. We did find two diners while in New York that were fantastic.

Pittsburgh… I moved to Greensburg (about 30 miles south-east, I think–near where they made Night of the Living Dead) from NY when I was about 15 (culture shock!), and went to school in Shady Side. At the time I hated it (it was the 70’s, and it wasn’t a very cheerful area at the time, and I was also 15 and an NYC kid, so I hated most things 🙂 , but I hear it’s actually a really nice city now. At some point, now that I’m 63, I should go back and re-evaluate!

I think you’d find a lot to see and thoroughly enjoy if you get reacquainted with Pittsburgh. The food alone is great for making a trip. My brother pointed out several areas where movies were made, but I’ll have to again ask the names of these films

Awesome! I love “Penn Mac” for all my cheeses, deli meats, and nuts. Glad you enjoyed it.
