The trip from Venice to Rhodes is just under two hours flying time. I had my notebook and coffee situated on the tray-table intending to write down notes on Venice, Murano and Burano while still fresh in my mind, but all I could do was stare out the window mesmerized by the view. I was astounded by the varying colors of blue above and below the aircraft. And, depending on the cloud cover, direction of the plane or the depth of the water there were colors across the spectrum such as azure, sapphire, indigo, peacock blue, aquamarine and cerulean, as we moved from the Adriatic to the Ionian Sea’s.
The sky merging with the beautiful water would have inspired abstract expressionist Mark Rothko to create most lavishly. Once we landed on the island of Rhodes the color of blue continued as a dominant pigment across the landscape.
