Summer Classics

{Nothing says summer like swimming in the Aegean Sea, I had a great time last year testing my skills in the rough waters off shore}

Summer is fast approaching, and in a matter of weeks our gardens will be transformed into a lush world of color. Schedules will be altered to sneak in lazy sun-splashed afternoons to picnic, swim or just lie around doing absolutely positively nothing. Remember when you couldn’t wait for school to end so, you could spend the entire day socializing with friends, travel the country with family or eat outdoors.

{Slice delicious watermelon for an after dinner treat or pop into your Italian deli for {pasticcini italiani} pastries to indulge in when it is too hot for baking}

Well…. throw caution to the wind, enjoy a few warm weather amusements, and begin cultivating a few to make your own traditions. Write list of travel or cook books you looking forward to reading this summer? Friends have given me a list of shows to watch on TV or Netflix. And, even in the warmer months I always enjoy testing recipes to fit the season, such as an al fresco meal {eating in the fresh air} for evenings with friends!

Summer’s Last Hurrah

IMG_4296It is good to be home after experiencing the severe heat and crowds when traveling throughout Europe, and while I still have a post to share from Athens it feels great to be back at Heath.

IMG_1612 IMG_4214As summer comes to a close, I shall miss meals prepared outside on the grill and served with slices of seasonal fruit, but cannot wait to turn on the ovens to bake or the stove to cook stews and soups.

It is always thrilling to witness the transition of each season and fall has to be my absolute favorite time of the year. Perhaps it is because I am not a fan of summer’s  heat or humidity. I love the fact that soon there will be chilly mornings and evenings along with leaves rustling and the smell of wood from fireplaces. And, there is nothing, absolutely nothing that beats a crisp clear night filled with stars! Fall is almost here!!!!!

Summers Simple Pleasures

IMG_1752
Enjoy a fresh bowl of cherries, while sitting on the porch reading your favorite books!!

For me summer does not officially start around Memorial Day or at the June solstice, it has always begun on July 1, my birthday. And nothing says summer like a fresh bowl of cherries, freshly cut flowers, a free concert or a deliciously cold Mojito. The older I get I find myself relishing an uncomplicated lifestyle along with the simplest of pleasures, which can merely be found by opening your front door.

Plump orange Asiatic Lily flowers on the deck are enjoyed from the breakfast room or family room during the early part of summer!! This photo was taken as the sun was setting the other night.

Where is it written that that spending large sums of money makes you blissfully content. Nothing tops cavorting with friends while listening to Reggae music at the Reston Town Center after dark or watching butterflies move about the garden.

As the warmer weather rolls around it is definitely time to move at a much slower pace and steal a bit of self-indulgence for yourself. Build time into the day for those unexpected luxuries such as sitting on the porch sipping mint tea and doing absolutely nothing or stargazing during the evenings waiting for the moon to rise.

Get into spirit of the season because, you will not have to spend a cent or least a fortune!
