Start an Activity
Since our clocks were set back one hour on Sunday, we now have additional time to set aside for ourselves, by taking our minds off-line and completely relaxing. I notice, as we get older we spend less time doing the things we truly love and simply enjoy because; we are so caught up in our daily routines. When choosing an activity or hobby it is important to relax and completely unwind. I find that if I do not have time carved out for me, I cannot think creatively. I need that time to produce and generate ideas by indulging my imagination. This is the perfect way to get in touch with your inner self and lose yourself in a fun craft. Indulge a passion for painting, music, dance or books. Collect art or pieces that are not expensive, but are representative of what you love, and items you want to surround yourself with on daily basis.

IMG_0960{Dahlia tubers are frost sensitive and must be dug up and stored over winter}

Dahlias
I spent Saturday morning digging up dahlia tubers since temperatures were going to drop tremendously Sunday evening to 28 degrees. We have had several evenings with chilling temperatures and I did not want to press my luck by losing these gorgeous plants to the bitter cold. So, I set about putting the garden to bed for the winter by raking leaves and dead branches into piles for the compost. Placing a bit of mulch around a few of the shrubs and flowers to ensure they are protected from the frosty months ahead will be quite rewarding in the spring.

Delight in Decadent Cheeses

  • When relaxing in the evenings get a wedge of Parmesan to cut into chunks or small pieces to serve alongside your version of an antipasto, which may include, but is not limited to olives, pepperoncini, prosciutto, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes.
  • Try a slice of Stilton to pair with sherry or a port wine, and then serve it with walnuts, crackers, biscuits or deliciously decadent black bread.
  • I first tried the Humboldt Fog (goat cheese) while lunching at Hamilton’s restaurant in Washington DC last year and while reading the menu there was a brief history of each of the cheeses that would be served on the platter.  The Humboldt Fog is a mildly creamy California cheese named after Humboldt County and its thick morning fog, it is relatively young cheese (1980’s) and created by Mary Keens from McKinleyville, CA. At Hamilton’s they served this cheese with sliced pears and a pot of honey to drizzle over the fruit and cheese. Along with my glass of white wine, it was the perfect accompaniment.

Fall is one of my family’s favorite seasons, and we are thrilled when the month of October starts with the weather turning crisp and cool, along with the annual traditions within our community such as Oktoberfest, the Haunted Houses, the Jazz Festival and apple picking that make the month quite spectacular.

I never put a spooky spin on our front yard, but will pick a few pumpkins from the garden and strategically place them on the front porch alongside the earthy-colored chrysanthemums. And Malcolm our cat does his yearly rendition of attracting the trick or treaters attention by preening on the front porch until they ask if he is a real black cat, then he moves to authenticate his reality and then waits to be petted and hugged… he really is too much!!! I think what Malcolm really wants is to see what candy the children have in their bags, and hopes that one of them offers him a tasty treat.

Well tonight my family will be partaking in a few of their regular fall traditions such as the guy’s watching football on all the TV’s in the house (I am still not a true fan of the sport), handing out treats to all the ghouls and goblins and making a pot of thick and rich chili, the perfect comfort food for a spooky night!!

Have a Very Scary and Safe Halloween!!
