Holiday Planning

{Clementines, tangerines and walnuts are a traditional holiday treat in our home}

It is officially December and company is coming. The holidays are in full swing and time can truly fly when working, taking care of family or just decorating the house. Despite all the planning and preparations, which can leave the strongest of us totally exhausted, you ask yourself… how can I treasure this wondrous season? Well by taking a few short cuts of course and definitely sticking to basic traditions.

My colorful holiday notebook amongst cookbooks and notes for creative ideas when cooking.

Guest are confirming their arrival time to Heath, last minute shopping has been accomplished, and decorations are up with a small tree twinkling away in the family room. First on the to-do-list, is a trip to la Madeline to place an order for a two-layer coconut cake and a pecan pie, which will save on baking time in the kitchen during the holidays. Secondly, I have been blanching and then freezing veggies; broccoli rabe, broccoli, cauliflower, mustard and collard greens to be used during and after Christmas so, that creating a gratin, casserole or stir-fry is not such a cumbersome task.  My aim is to spend as much time in the evenings sitting in the window seat, watching the sunset, curled up with a hot cup of cocoa with a big dash of Grand Marnier.

Plan stylishly,
K

Delicious tarts from the Confeitaria Colombo bakery in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Crème brûlée is always a welcome treat when the weather is not cooperating. It is comfort food at its simplest!

What better way to end the holiday weekend than with a few stylish favorites? I love discovering bits of new information from friends, reading or through shear observation, and then sharing these delightful tidbits on Stylish Heath. But, when one travels to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the holiday weekend, like our on the spot reporter Tony, what does one do when they arrive during the rainy season and cloud cover prevails? Well the next best thing of course…head to the nearest bakeries and patisseries along the shores of Ipanema and Copacabana in search of the best treats. Crème brûlée and tarts always hit the spot when the option for sun-bathing at the beach has been rained out.

“Ai Weiwei: Not at Blenheim Palace” by Jessica Sarah Rinland {Click here to see video}
Part one of the portrait of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, China’s most famous dissident, places flowers in the basket of a bike parked outside his home and will continue to do so until his passport is returned by the Chinese Government. When he was arrested in 2011 and held for 81 days without charge, this sparked global protest. With his passport confiscated Ai currently detained in China works under restricted conditions.
