Thanksgiving Prep

The cooler weather, festive decorations have me excitedly anticipating the holidays! Although, I still have our pumpkins on the front porch along with colorful leaves spiraling the stairwell, I prefer to enjoy the fall and keep the Christmas decorations put away until after Thanksgiving.

Over the last few years I partake in a few annual traditions that are a must to feel the season is well underway. The Friday before Thanksgiving, NPR’s Susan Stamberg does her yearly rendition on how to make “Mama Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish” and another local radio station begins playing seasonal tunes, which are great to cook meals by or to wrap gifts.

Preparations have begun at Heath for a very quiet Thanksgiving dinner. Our big family meal is going to be during Christmas when the entire group can come together for nostalgia and holiday hilarity!!

Recipe for Mama Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish Recipe from NPR
2 cups raw cranberries
1 small onion
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons horseradish
Grind the cranberries and onion together. Add remaining ingredients and mix. Put in a plastic container and freeze. An hour before serving, move the container from the freezer to the refrigerator compartment to thaw. The relish will be thick, creamy, and shocking pink.

Makes 1 1/2 pints.

A Few Favorites

It’s November and the clock is ticking off the hours towards Thanksgiving, and before you know it a lavish dinner will have been served and you will be frantically searching for leftovers, not to mention trying build in time to visit a few galleries or museums, instead of shopping during “black Friday”. Time where does it go? It is also imperative to find the right outfits to wear when invited to those holiday soirées. Last weekend I was invited to a DKNY fashion show at the Tyson’s Bloomindales and the fabrics of the clothing that came down the runway were absolutely luxurious.

Listed are a few favorites I would like to experience or do a bit of research on before the start of the New Year!

ModiglianiAmedeo Modigliani’s “Nu Couché” {1917-18}

I enjoyed studying art from the early 20th century while in college and Modigliani was always a favorite. His painting “Nu Couché “sold this week at Christie’s for $170.4 million to a former taxi driver turned billionaire Liu Yiqian and his art collector wife Wang Wei. They have two private galleries in Shanghai that I must research so, the next time I am their bustling city, I hope to gain an invitation to see this magnificent expressionistic painting.

I may take the “red eye” or train to New York to check out this exhibition Frank Stella: A Retrospective {Oct30, 2015- Feb, 7 2016} at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
