Colors of Spring

I was four years old when I became aware of my intense enthusiasm for flowers, and can remember picking our neighbors blooms to place in a glass for our dinner table one night. Much to my mother’s chagrin she soothed over our neighbor’s exasperation at my being in their yard, and a few weeks later she helped me plant my first flower garden. My love of gardening and flowers definitely has its roots from my childhood, nurtured by mom’s love for nature, and my being captivated with her rustic gardens.

I’m still enchanted with flowers and their enduring power to draw me outside to clip a bouquet for a quaint spot in the house. Peonies from the south end of the property always bloom first, and this year due to an extremely warm winter they’ve arrived a few weeks early.

The hydrangea on the northern side of the yard are vibrant and alive with their huge blooms, they appeal to me on so many levels. I love being in my garden where I can roll up my sleeves and feel most alive. Each season, as I work on a new row I view the blooms surrounding me and feel pleased these lovely flowers are in my yard.

Stay stylish,
Kathleen

A Fantastic Spring Weekend

It’s been an extremely busy weekend; laying mulch, designing garden rows, and popping downtown to the Philips Collection to see the Bonnard exhibit.

House plants have been moved outside to the deck since it was going to rain all weekend, then next it was time to stake the peonies from the southern side of the property.

The first major retrospective of Pierre Bonnard in 20 years at the Philips Collection. The exhibit gives one the opportunity to explore sources that fueled the French artist’s creative practice. Bonnard’s immediate surroundings were a main focus; landscapes of Paris, Normandy and the South of France to intimate interior spaces …… a day in the life of the artist.

After several hours viewing artwork, it was time for lunch at the busy French brasserie Pastis in the Union Market district [1323 4th Street NE]. Their cheese plate was a selection of three cheeses from the cellars of Jasper Hills Farms was delciious. The selection of breads and wine were the start to the meal, and lunch was the cioppino and onion soup with a delicious Caesar salad …. overall a most enjoyable day!
