Peonies

IMG_1577IMG_1727Admiring blooms within gardens or viewing their pictures in magazines has always made my heart beat a bit faster. I remember at a young age a neighbor grew the most fantastic tulips in her yard, and the beauty of them all was her black tulip’s…and oh my gosh, I thought I would leap over the moon if I could not cut a few to place in my bedroom. So, I sneaked out at sundown snipped a few cuttings and et viola, my desk area was transformed into the perfect study area. But, oh the guilt of cutting my neighbor’s flowers made me feel horrible. So, I told my mom what I did and she had me build a bouquet from her own flowerbed, promptly walk over to our neighbor to apologize.

My love of flowers has never waned, as I continue to peer into secret gardens, peek in yards or read books, I do everything necessary to learn all there is to know of these exotic delights.

IMG_0143 IMG_0146Another deep affection is for peonies and though these blossoms are around for a short three weeks it becomes imperative each year to get as many cuttings into vases as possible. With scissors in hand, I have already begun cutting these flowers to place in rooms throughout Heath. We had a severe thunderstorm last night, which pushed these herbaceous beauties to the ground, but there are a few sturdier buds growing in the cutting garden just waiting to bloom and to be placed in vases.

    1. We had a row of peonies on our Iowa farm while I was growing up. Yes, they don’t last long AND they seem to attract storms that shorten their blooming time. Then too, they attract ants. But, they are so beautiful and I’d love a row of them now.

  1. I live in the country. My gardens are filled with flowers. But it is the peony that makes my heart beat faster. They are lush, voluptuous and gorgeous flowers. All the more treasured for their too-short blooming time. Thank you for sharing your magnificent photographs of these darlings. Cheers, Virginia

    1. You are most gracious and thank you for such kind words. Those peonies were my mothers and I look forward to them blooming each spring. Though the bloom time is short, I’ll grab my camera to take lots of photos !

  2. I am so jealous of your beautiful flowers! I live in the high country of arid Arizona and spend time every morning watering my few flowers in pots. The ground is too rocky and the wandering critters think they are a buffet! I’m going to try peonies this year and see what happens!

    1. I think you will thoroughly enjoy working with “peonies”. I transplanted four plants last fall and seven new shoots appeared a two weeks ago. My mother planted several of the plants on the southern part of the property and they still grow beautifully after 30 years!!! Please let me know how peonies workout in your zone!!!

  3. I don’t know if there is this kind of flower in my country because I am not a connoisseur of flowers. But after reading the post and seeing the photo, I feel like it. Putting a vase of flowers on a desk, enjoying them for a while when stop working for a bit, is a way to relax.
